The fourth day of the NSS Taster programme by Christopher Avery Kong

Today is the fourth day of the NSS Taster programme, we have the new lessons: BAFS,IS. In the hall,  many other class are all chating and they don't seems they are listening to the teacher. But, we just remain silent and we  even  don't speak any words in the hall. It is very annoying that they are disturbing us for tasting the new subjects!

Then, we go to the room 511 to attend the integrated science lesson for two hours. The integrated sciencve lesson is very interesting because it could do many exercise and we can observe the things around us.

I think we need to have more these NSS Taster programme.Actually just one week of the kind of programme cannot taste the true "flavour" of these subjects, i hope we can choose the right subject that are we ARE INTERESED IN.

The Third Day Of The NSS Taster Program ( By Elizabeth Chan)

Today is the third day we have the NSS Taster program. We had the VA, English, Chemistry and Geography.

In the Chemistry lesson, we has known that the things that we will learn in form 4 and what we need to have if we really want to study chemistry for our elective subject. We also do some of the experiments that form 4 will do. The first experiment is to prepare the raw materials of chlorine bleach. In this experiment, we are going to electrolyse concentrated sodium chloride solution, and to test the properties of the products. The second experiment is to study the bleaching action of household bleach. In the both of the experiments, we had known that many things that we didn’t learn in our lesson. For example: we had known that household bleach is alkaline. Also, household bleach should not mix with the other chemical solutions. This is because toxic chlorine gas will be given off if we mix chlorine bleach with acidic chemical.

In the Geography lesson, the teacher told us the structure of NSS Geography. Also, we had many activities during the lesson such as we need to put the names of the places of Hong Kong on the right place of the map.

For me, I will choose chemistry for my elective subject. I think this is very interesting and I think this will not make me boring. There are many experiments we need to do. Although some of them is quite dangerous, I still hoping to do the experiments. I knew that almost everyone in our class wanted to choose chemistry for their elective subject, and because of this, I need to be more hard working.  

The second day of taster programme (Nora Tsoi)

 We had the first lesson in the hall, it is ECON, we had to do a mind map about what we think ECON is of cause, the thing that we first write down is 'bank and money'.
And the next lesson is also in the hall,it is HM&SC, I did not know what is this subject about before, we have a piece of article to read, it is about smoking, although there are some chinese next to some difficult words, but the article seems very long.
After that,we have our ICT lesson and Chinese lesson.
After we have our lunch, we had to go to the hall to have the sharing session. We can ask our question to some people that choose that subject.
We had our lesson in hall again, it is E.LIT, when the teacher introduce this subject, it seems quite fun, but of cause I know that it is very difficult, we read a short story in this lesson, and to answer some question, in the first few question, it is not too difficult, but some question need us to think, and the answer is not in the story.

The first day of the Taster program by Winson

Today is the first day of the Taster program which is about to let us know more about the NSS subjects. The first two lesson we went down to the hall for listening to Mr. Dik's briefing and know more about how the Other Learning Experience(OLE) works. Then the first lesson we taste was Physics by Mr. Tong. We tried to learn about the refraction of light, and knew that Physics really need a lot of calculation.
After the Lunch time, we went down to the hall again for the Tourism and Hospitality Studies (T&HS) and the Chinese History. In the T&HS, we knew that it is about some travelings and how to regale customers correctly. In the Chinese History, we knew we have to recite a lot of historical information. Till F.5, we have to recite (understand?) at least 80% of 4 books..
After school, we finally could play our remaining 7 minutes soccer match with 2A! Henry, Oscar, Jason, James and Terence represented our class. We still got draw until in the overtime, Jason scored! He shot to the farther side of 2A's keeper and finally we got VICTORY~ But it will be hard to win again tomorrow as 3D is our next opponent..Just do it!

Finally after Thursday, every UT had finished. We could relax again, we wouldn't need to study any subjects for the test again. We felt very happy with it, but after the UT we would felt that we might not did very well in the UT, so we might fail in the UT. After the UT people would started talking about the questions of it, they would disscused the questions which they felt difficult in it. And this was the first problem that we were worried about after the UT.

    The second problem was, New Year holiday was coming very soon, it just around one week then we would finish school days for two week and to start enjoying our holiday. However it was holiday, it means that we would have a lot of holiday homework to do. Every subject must had at least one or two homework to do. It means we couldn't really enjoy our holiday, we need to care our works any time to remember to do our the works before we start going to school again. And for me I will go to travel in the holiday, and when I come back to Hong Kong it just left a few days before school. I don't think I can do all the homework on that few days, so it means I need to start doing the homework now or bring it to do while I go to travel......

Thursday By Stephanie

   Today,the weather is finally warmer than before. In the first lesson,we went down to the hall for taking the class photo. Everyone of us dressed smartly and smiled happily. I really look forward to seeing the photos! :)

  Next,China Studies! This lesson is definitely a fatal lesson for us because Miss Chow returned the China Studies Uniform Test paper to us! Most of us got a plesant and excellent result! Meantime, improvement were shown in all of our performance when compare to the last time. I hope that we can continue to study hard and strive for the best!

  Finally,during the class period,we will have the Liberal Studies Uniform Test. All of us are preparing wholeheartedly.I hope that all of us will be fine.

English lessons By Henry Mak

In this year, our English lessons are very different. It is different to last year.

In the first lessons in this year, we change our group. I think that it will be a new and good start but it is not. We are doing any new things. They are very difficult.

Firstly, we are reading a English book called ‘The Spider’s Wed’. For the first time, I see the book cover. I think the book cover is quite interesting but it is not. The book is very boring. There are many new words that I do not know. I do not understand what this book is talking about. This book is too difficult to me.

Secondly, we need to use the new homework book and classwork book. There are many rules that we need to follow. First, we should not use any correction pen because Mr. Cheng want us to know our mistake but I do not think it is useful. Second, when we finish writing a line, we should skip a line and write on next line. I think it is not useful too. It is wasting the paper.

 

Thirdly, we have many group works. For example, we have the new sharing, blog, idioms. We have many works to do. We have a diary too. We need to do it thrice a week. I think it is good. It is better than the journal last year. Last year, we needed to do 4 pages. I think it is too much.

Bruce Lee(Diary) terence yip 3a33

Bruce lee was born on 27^th of November, 1940 in San Francisco, in the United States

He was a Hong Kong actor, martial arts instructor and founder of the Jeet Kune Do. One of the most famous movie of him is Fist of Fury. He was the most influential martial artist of the 20^th century. Also he is a cultural icon of Chinese Kung Fu.

Lee was the forth child of five children in his family. His father called Lee Hoi-Chuen was a famous Hong Kong Cantonese opera singer and film actor. His mother named Grace Ho was a literary author.

Lee became a child star when his father discovered his acting talent. Also the audience appreciated his acting skill in a movie called My son A-Chang. So that he became more famous and many people thought he would be a famous actor when he grew up.  

Bruce Lee Started to learn Kung Fu when he was seven years old. His father thought that his body was so weak. He wanted him to have a stronger body. So that his father let him to learn Tai Ji.

Lee learnt Wing Chun from Ip Man while he studied in La Salle College. He did Kung Fu exercise very hard until midnight everyday so his body became stronger

and his Kung Fu became skillful and better.

In March of 1961, Lee studied philosophy in University of Washington. Also he met his wife Linda while he was studying. He build up Jeet Kune Do in second year of his life in university. He taught student and exercised himself very hard. His kung Fu skill became stronger, especially on his legs.

In 1968, Bruce lee return to work on movie. He tried to act in a few of action movies although these movies were not very famous. but It made him decided to come back to hong kong for action movie.

After Lee came back to hong kong. He started to act in action movie as Fist of Fury, Way of the dragon etc. His Hong Kong and Hollywood-produced films were changed the traditional Hong Kong martial arts film to a new level of popularity. Also he change the icon of Chinese to west which is weak and useless became strong and Kung Fu Master.

Unfortunetly, he died on 20^th of July in 1973. He was discovered at home of Ting Pei which was his best friend. Doctors diagnosed cerebral edema was a main reason of his death.

He build up Jeet Kune Do concept and act a lot of action movies. It made a lot of western people know more Chinese Kung Fu and culture. Also he change the image of Chinese to western people. Chinese people are strong!

Jeet Kune Do was built up by Bruce Lee which is a Kung Fu especially for street fighting

Lee concluded that the fight was wasted too many time and he had failed to live up to his potential using his Wing Chun skills. He thought that traditional martial arts skills were too ossify in street fighting. So that Lee decided to develop a system with an emphasis on "practicality, flexibility, speed, and efficiency". He started to use different methods of training such as weight training for strength etc.

He is my role model because he never give up in Kung FU and acting. Although some of people said that he just good at Kung FU and no acting skill. So he tried to use the movie called the death of game to prove he was a good actor , not just in Kung fu. He wanted to show he was a good actor too. However, he could not finish it anymore. Beside it, his kung fu was really wonderful but I can’t enjoy his new movie anymore!

China studies project Deadline and L.s UT Coming...... By Dawn Lau

Tomorrow,our class need to hand in the China Studies project.I have "type" a lot of words

in my own group project,is very tired to "type".On Monday,me and my groupmates have worked until 11 something,but still we still have to correct a lot of things and we have to hand in tomorrow,I don't know what should we do......hope that me and my groupmates can succeed....Most of  the class were on a harsh to finish the project,and they also need to revise L.S,so it maybe a kind of stress for us.

In Thrusday,we will have our L.s Uniform Test!!!I have not revise well,but I heard my teacher said that in UT,there is just three big questions and no need to remember the name of the people,they will give us,but anyway I will try to revise three notes-The Seaborne Empires,The Renaissance and The Enlightment.Although they don't need us to revise everything detail in the notes,but I will revise some of the names and important facts.Usually,my scores in Ls is not really good because I am not good at answering long questions,I have to think and answer them in a way that make sense,but I will try to do my best!

And finally,I wish everyone in our class can pass in all UT.

Maths UT......By Konnor Kwan

Today we were scared about the Maths Ut. We were worried about could we remember the things like the formula, the equation, etc. So I thought we all studied very hard yesterday.
   And I saw many students were studying at the free time like class period or recess. They studied very hard, they would try to so some questions themself, when they had problem with the questions, they would discussed with others or asked someone who was good at Maths.
   However, when it ws lunch time, we didn't study Maths. It wasbecause lunch time was the time that 3A were having clss football competition. That was the second thing we exicted about it. At that time we seems forgot the Maths UT already, we just worried about would we  win in the competition. But when it was the end of lunch time, both classes didn't get any marks so they needed to play it next day.
   Then we also used a little time of Science lesson, around ten minutes to have the final revision for the Maths UT.
   Beside, we felt very difficult after the UT. There were many students seems didn't  know about all the questions especially the problem solving section. So now we are worrying will we pass in the UT......

A Special ENGLISH lesson by Tiffany Ho

In English lesson , We have talk a new book "the Spider's Web' . It is written by Adrian Tillery . Mr.  Adrian Tillery was visit to our school before . He taught  us how to write a story.After about 15 mins we finish talk about the book.
And then, we need to search some information to fill in a worksheet , so Mr. Cheng  led each group an i pad for search information and let us to try to use i pad . So , do you think it is a SPECIAL English lesson ??

3A Diary By Edith HO

Although we got two tests and a lot of work to do in this week, I still got an unforgettable day with my friends!

Yesterday was 3A’s English only day. As we all got the experience of having in that day, we don’t seem so nervous about that. We all start to enjoy the English Only Day but not think it was annoying. Most of the 3A’s now think rather than think the day was a punishment, so why don’t we enjoy the day to have more experience and an unforgettable day! I really hope that later on, that will be holding a School English Only Day so that the whole school of students will speak English together and get another chance to learn more English. (Maybe we should hold a Chinese Only Day for Mr. Cheng to learn more Chinese!!)

Nothing really special today, just for the school works and a frozen P.E. lesson! After the CL tutorial after school. Jody, Michelle, Sharon and I went to have a little tea break. Sharon and I eat a little bowl of noodle, and Jody and Michelle got a toast. It was super yummy!

The next few days will be another disaster as we will having a LS quiz. On Sunday, the 3A girls’ choral speaking got a filming for the ETV. We will go home really late as the end of filming will be last until 9:30 p.m. But on Monday, we got a math quiz and we have to hand-in an 800 words report! Hope 3A will get over for another weeks.

A funny day in 3A by Scotland Sharon

Today English lesson, we start to use our new notebook. We all do not feel comfortable of not using correction pen. Every time, when we are going to use the correction pen, we stop and suddenly remember not to use. I hope we all can be conforming to it soon! And we have watched a film, it is about a couple of octopus, the girl octopus was caught by a man, and it is talking about how the male octopus saves the girl octopus. From this movie, I have learned how to use different music to control audience’s emotion, for example we can use suggestive music to describe a couple. We can also use different color to present different gender. We can easily recognize by their color, the girl is in pink and the boy is in orange. And from this story we have learned what the different parts of the story are.

  In the Putonghua lesson, we have learn how to sell things, we can know different new product by different media, for example, newspaper, advertisement, radio etc. Then we watched different advertisement of different product. After that, Miss Zhao let us to sell one things from the worksheet, all the groups including our group sell the “Ba Wang” shampoo, we sell this item by telling others that Edith had no hair before, and after using “Ba Wng” shampoo, she grow her hair beautifully and in black.

Today is a wonderful day. It's not about the lesson. It's the time that we chatted with Miss Tang. I think it will become our memorable time in future. It's our time. It's 1A or 2A time. We can talk about the things past, the things happen, the things in future. The things you would like to talk about. A time to take a chance to express your feeling in front of your classmates, no privacy and no secert between us. It's a time to relax, just put away your work or other things else during this busy time. You can talk to your ex-class teacher. It's an golden opportunity. If you missed, I would be afraid you don't get it next time. I am excited and joyed to be in this gathering. It's amazing to have a such kind of gathering in this busy time. No matter the things changed, we are in different classes or someone leaved this school, we have already been through all the happy or tough time. We won't have hesitation about it because we trust each other. We are all in this together since we have finshed the Form 1-2. It's really a joyful gathering. We can forget all the work and test and chat in this kind of time.

School Day by Scotland(KAREN)

Today is also a very cold day just like a few days before. I really want the weather become warmer, so that my hands can be warm and not as cold as ices. I don't like to go to school at winter because I am very warm in my bed! However, my favourite festival is winter. I love eating ice-cream in winter although it make me feel colder.

Go back to today, first two lessons were Chinese. We first do a test of listening, than Ms Chiu give back our speaking UT result us. There's nothing special at all.

After recess is our LS lesson. There will be two UTs next week! One is LS and one is Maths. That mean we will be very busy this week and the following week, as we need to do a lot of revisions. Although there are two days between two exams, time is still not enough of us to do revisions!

The most interesting lesson of today is science lesson after lunch. We went down to the ground floor to walk on the "stone road". Our science teacher Mr.Dik said that if we walk more on it, about 10-15 minutes a day, we will get taller!But I don't think we can use it at the school for 10-15 minutes a day...

I want something special! I don't want all days to be the same mode! It will be very boring if everyday is like that! It will be like a robot's life if everyday are the same. I hope there will be something special tomorrow, so the day will not be that boring.

Finally Friday - X'mas decorations taken down by CTC

Friday is finally here!! We've actually only been back to school for 5 days, but it has felt like a really long week!! So, as mentioned in the previous posts, this has been a week of new things! Yet, as new things come, old things must go; and today signalled the end of the individual presentations which has been ongoing since October! As a whole, I've been really happy with how they've went. I hope that you can all keep in mind the skills that we've talked through during these past few months because giving presentations is something that you will almost certainly encounter if you enter university. Remember, the key to success in presentations is preparation and practice!

Also gone are the X'mas decorations which were taken down after-school by some classmates. Thank you to all those who helped to put them up and also to those who took them down. Honestly speaking, I thought our classroom was the most beautiful one in the whole school in terms of Christmas decorations!!! Thanks again to everyone for giving us a memorable Christmas.

This week has been relatively relaxing for most of you as I've been doing everything: news-sharing, idioms presentation and class blog. So now it's your turn to start working and contributing to the class! Look forward to all your work!

Prizing giving in Life-education lesson by CTC

In today's life-education lesson, the organization responsible for arranging the training camp and voluntary services came to present awards to round-up all the activities and also give out prizes.

The award-winning students were Nora, Jody, Rachel, Stephanie and Esther. Well-done to all five of you! I think your hard-work and efforts during all the activities were noticed by your classmates and I think you fully-deserved your rewards.  Also, thank you to everyone else who also gave lots of efforts to ensure the camp and voluntary services were a success!

As I mentioned when I went on stage, a few things I want you all to remember from the camp are:

1. Teamwork - remember how the games in the camp were only possible if you all worked together. Whether you are a leader or just a team member, you still need to be able to use your own strengths to help your team work as best as it can.

2. Enjoying the journey - remember the hike? It wasn't about where we were going, but how we got there. The experience becomes memorable if you are able to enjoy the journey along the way. In our busy lives, we may just rush from one destination to another, neglecting what's in between. So my advice to you is, stop from time-to-time to look around, think about what you are doing and how you can enjoy it better. Once you are able to do this, you will see that life is so much more than what you thought before.

New Diaries & English-only Day by CTC

A third new thing in three days, perhaps it's getting a little bit too much? But as mentioned before, we should try to embrace change rather than avoid it.

So, the new format of the diary is to encourage you to write English (every day if possible). Each entry does not have to be lengthy, as long as you are writing something down regularly to record your feelings and memories of your S3 life. As mentioned in class, I want this to be something you can keep and read for years to come. So I encourage you to make a good job of it!

Today was also English-only day again. It seems that most students are used to the routine now and that it's not as tricky as the first few days. However, I was told that some people were speaking Chinese during lunch-time!!! >< Luckily, it was only one or two words. Again, I can only trust you to speak in English when I'm not around. Please don't waste this great opportunity to speak and improve your English!

Idioms! By CTC

Idioms are an important part of English because they are what native speakers use on a regular basis. My experience has been that students enjoy finding out the meaning of the idiom phrases, and get particularly motivated when they hear idioms in films or TV programmes that they watch.

But as I mentioned in class today, mastering the use of idioms is difficult. So for now, only use the idioms taught in class in your spoken English and avoid using them in your writing unless you are totally confident about how to use them (do remember that idioms are generally used in more informal occasions!).

The best way to learn idioms is to use them. Make sentences which are personal to you to make you remember the idioms taught. So for example:

Today, I was meant to be meeting the Principal about something important. But because I'm such a goldfish I totally forgot about the meeting and went to play football instead. Unfortunately, because we did not have the meeting, the oringinal plans we had ended up in smoke. So that I didn't get in trouble, I lied to the Principal that I was too ill to attend the meeting. Please don't let the cat out of the bag, otherwise I will get in serious trouble...wait, speaking of the devil, the Principal has just walked into the room...

So of course the above is not true!!! But, by writing a short story using the idioms, it makes it easier for me to remember them. That's why I would like each group to make a short drama to present the idioms starting from next week - make it memorable for yourselves and your classmates and everyone will be able to remember the idioms a bit better.

Happy New Year!! By CTC

It was great to see everyone (except Matthew) back in school today. I know all of you were still in holiday mood, and to be honest, I would also rather have been in bed at 8am too!! But, now that we're back we need to make the most of our time together.

As mentioned in today's class, there will be a few new things in this coming term.

First, we have the new base-groups in English lessons.  I really hope that you can speak to more classmates in English and try working with classmates other than your friends. In general, I'm pleased with how the groups ended up and hope you can take this as a chance to try new things.

We also have the news-sharing blog (http://3anewssharing.blogspot.com/) and group news-sharing, which aim to encourage you to read more news in English. Reading news daily is one of the best ways to learn more useful vocabulary, so I strongly recommend that you visit the blog regularly and not just when it's your group's turn to present.

In the coming few days, I will also introduce the idioms presentation as well as a new format of the journal writing. Further, we will soon be moving away from the text book for a period of time to undergo a novel study.

Perhaps for you guys you may think that there are always so many changes in English lessons. I understand that change, no matter how small, is always difficult to begin with. But change is necessary for us to improve and it goes back to what I said at the start of the term about moving out of our comfort zones. If you are able to meet change with a positive attitude, you will get over the initial difficulty quickly and make improvements beyond your expectations.

Finally, last term's big goal was to encourage you all to speak more and become more confident in speaking English. I've seen small improvements in most of you, and I've been encouraged by your performance in English-only Day! But it's not enough yet! Therefore, this term's aim is to not only make you speak English more, but to make you live English! Only by living English, will you truly learn the language properly. It's ambitious, but remember, I can offer you all the conditions needed for improving your English, but at the end of the day, it down to you and whether you accept these opportunities. Don't come to regret missed what you didn't do!
